On December 29, the Brazilian federal government welcomed Bhutan’s decision to allow poultry exports from Brazil to enter its market. With this recent development, Brazil gained 78 new markets in 39 countries, significantly surpassing the numbers of the last four years: in 2019, there were 35 new markets in 22 countries; in 2020, 74 in 24 countries; in 2021, 77 in 33 countries, and 2022, 53 in 26 countries.
Among the key markets reached this year, notable achievements include the trade of Brazilian beef and pork to Mexico and the Dominican Republic, respectively. In addition, Brazilian cotton is now available in Egypt, and papaya fruits can be enjoyed in Chile.
The sanitary concessions provided by each partner country are the result of the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) in developing technical information and engaging in international negotiations that led to agreements on sanitary and phytosanitary requirements, enabling the trade of goods and partnerships this year.
The agricultural attaché’s presence is also noteworthy, playing a crucial role in identifying opportunities for commercializing national products, attracting foreign investors, and overcoming barriers to Brazilian exports.
In addition to foreign markets, the ministry’s teams have achieved other significant victories, such as lifting the embargo on Brazilian beef imports to China after the confirmation of an isolated and atypical case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (mad cow disease). Furthermore, the acceptance of stocks of meat produced before the start of the embargo was obtained. The official quality certification of Brazilian cotton was also recognized in the Chinese market.
In Chile and Cuba, cooperation agreements were celebrated for adopting the “pre-listing” system to qualify exporting establishments.
In the United Kingdom, there was a full resumption of the system for accrediting establishments by the exporting country’s authority (pre-listing), and enhanced controls on British inspections of shipments of animal products from Brazil were removed.
Brazil’s Trade with Bhutan
From January to November of this year, Brazil recorded exports worth approximately US$3.09 million to Bhutan, almost twice the total exported in 2022. Among the products sent, meat stood out as the main item.
These results are the fruit of the joint efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).
