Brazil agriculture ministry announces new rules to prevent avian flu
Mar, 30, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202316
The Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil announced on Thursday, March 30, a measure that preventively suspends exhibitions, tournaments, trade fairs, and other events that could cause large clusters of birds to assemble, as a way to prevent the entry of the avian flu in the country, according to a statement.
The measure considers that the contact between wild and domestic birds and the gathering of live birds are essential factors in disseminating the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI).
The Ministry stated that “the preventive measures were taken given the global epidemiological situation of HPAI and its circulation in the South American continent through migratory wild birds that pose an imminent risk of the disease entering Brazil, a country free of the disease.”
Brazil is the largest exporter of chicken meat in the world, and the entry of avian flu into the country could affect the poultry industry.
