The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC) signed a protocol on Thursday (6/6) outlining sanitary and quarantine requirements for the export of Brazilian pecans to China. This agreement officially opens the Chinese market to Brazilian pecans.
The protocol was signed during the plenary meeting of the Chinese-Brazilian High-Level Cooperation Commission (Cosban) in Beijing. On behalf of Brazil, the protocol was signed by Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro.
Brazil is currently the fourth largest producer of pecan nuts globally, with an estimated orchard area of 11,000 hectares, 7,500 of which are in production. The country produces approximately 6,000 tons of pecans annually, trailing the United States (63,000 tons), Mexico (51,000 tons), and South Africa (20,000 tons). According to the Brazilian Pecan Farming Institute (IBPecan), Brazilian pecan production could grow by up to 70% by 2030.
