Brazil breaks bean export record

According to the Brazilian Institute of Beans and Pulses (IBRAFE), Brazil is reaching a historic milestone in bean exports, driven by the growing organization of the pulses sector. By September 2024, the country had exported 217,000 tonnes of beans, setting a new record.
Most of the exported beans were sold at consumer-friendly prices or varieties consumed little domestically. The largest share went to India, totaling 102,000 tonnes, consisting of 70,000 tonnes of white cowpea from Mato Grosso and blackeyed beans from Bahia, as well as 39,000 tonnes of green and black mung beans.
IBRAFE also reported that, as expected at the end of 2023, when concerns arose about potential challenges in marketing black beans, exports were sent to Venezuela (28,000 tonnes), Mexico (26,000 tonnes), Guatemala (11,000 tonnes), and the Dominican Republic (6,000 tonnes). Additionally, around 35,000 tonnes of striped and red beans were shipped abroad, helping to diversify export markets.
Brazil has been exporting beans every year since 2010, with an initial focus on two varieties. By 2021, it harvested 18 different types and exported them to 75 countries. The expansion of irrigated areas has fueled this growth, and Brazil must now accelerate its international connections to strengthen its presence in established markets while also entering new ones. This positive trajectory has reduced the risks for Brazilian producers, making the global market a viable option for avoiding losses while ensuring the bean sector’s sustainability and profitability.
