Brazil: coffee exports reach 3.2 million bags in September; see more below

Coffee exports in Brazil reached 3.294 million 60kg bags of all types of coffee in the month of September, according to data from the monthly statistical report by the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé).
However, the sector remains in decline, and this result led to a 5.3% decrease compared to the 3.480 million bags recorded in the same period in 2022.
Year-to-Date Coffee Exports
According to Cecafé, the shipments in the first three months of the year, during the 2023/2024 harvest, reached 9.993 million bags, resulting in a foreign exchange revenue of $1.998 billion. Compared to the same period between July and the end of September last year, the performance showed an increase of 13.1% in volume and a decrease of 4.8% in income.
For the first nine months of 2023, Brazil still saw a 9.1% decrease in coffee exports compared to January to September of the previous year, amounting to 26.225 million bags. This resulted in a revenue decrease of 17.9%, totaling $5.547 billion.
According to the president of Cecafé, the decrease in export volumes is due to the performance of the Arabica variety, which faced an adverse scenario due to declining prices on the New York Stock Exchange, making them unattractive to national producers.
“In this scenario, coffee farmers became more resistant to new deals, and with narrower differentials, there is no appeal to the other end, with buyers being less active at this time,” he emphasized.
Additionally, there were delays in port shipments due to logistical issues involving ship changes and postponements by some companies.

Export Destinations
In the first nine months of the year, the United States remains the primary destination for Brazilian coffee, importing 4.359 million bags, 25.7% less than the same period in 2022. This amounts to 16.6% of total shipments in the recent period.
Germany, accounting for 12% of shipments, acquired 3.146 million bags (-38.4%) and ranked second. Following is Italy, with the purchase of 2.036 million bags (-15.2%), Japan with 1.696 million bags (+24.1%), and Belgium with 1.432 million bags (-37.7%).
Among the top 10 trading partners for Brazilian coffee until September this year, China remains a positive standout.
Coffee Types
Arabica coffee remains the most exported from January to September, with 20.803 million bags, accounting for 79.3% of the total. The shipments of Canephora coffee are the only ones with a positive performance this year, growing a substantial 111% compared to 2022.
The president of the council argues that this Brazilian variety remains more competitive in the global market and is in high demand due to problems in the production of robusta in important producing origins, especially Vietnam and Indonesia.
“It is no wonder, then, that the Vietnamese have increased their imports of green coffee from Brazil by a significant 537% in the year-to-date until September, nor that the Indonesians have recorded an 85.5% increase in acquisitions of our natural product during the same period,” the president concludes.
