Brazil earns over US$ 1 billion in exports of medical devices

Brazilian medical device exports soared by 13.69% in 2023, reaching a total of US$ 1.06 billion. Out of this figure, US$ 596.12 million constituted exports of medical and hospital products, marking a marginal growth of 0.18% compared to 2022. Notably, the laboratory segment witnessed the highest growth (87%) among the medical device verticals. Water filtration devices for laboratory use emerged as Brazil’s primary medical device export in 2023, followed by heart valves, medical bags, sterilized catguts, and orthopedic articles and devices.
Larissa Gomes, project and international marketing manager at ABIMO – Brazilian Association of the Medical Device Industry, attributes this surge to increased exports to China. She notes that China, which ranked 16th among Brazil’s main foreign sales destinations in 2022, became the second-largest consumer of Brazilian medical devices in 2023.
Exports from the rehabilitation segment also surged by 25.04% in 2023, totaling US$102.16 million. However, dentistry was the sole sector to witness a drop in exports, declining by 5.12%.
In line with the sector’s trajectory, exports from national manufacturers associated with Brazilian Health Devices (BHD), a sectoral project by ABIMO in partnership with ApexBrasil, grew by 7.5% in 2023, reaching US$ 106.61 million. Gomes attributes these positive results to the efficient strategies developed by the project, focusing on identifying the best internationalization opportunities and target markets.
Main medical devices exported by members in 2023 included instruments for dentistry, orthopedic articles and devices, instruments for use in medicine and surgery, and cement for dental fillings.
Conversely, medical device imports surged to US$8.18 billion in 2023, representing a 9.80% increase from 2022. Unlike exports, where laboratory products were highlighted, they constituted the least representation in imports, totaling US$ 3.84 billion, accounting for 47% of the total imported by the sector in 2023.
Among the main suppliers of medical devices imported by Brazil were the United States, Germany, China, Ireland, and Switzerland. Notably, immunological products for laboratory use, instruments and apparatus for medicine and surgery, probes/catheters, and reagents for laboratory diagnosis were the main imported goods.
The top consumer markets for Brazilian medical devices in 2023 were the United States, China, Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia. The remarkable surge in imports to China was primarily driven by increased imports of equipment for water purification for laboratory use.
Among BHD-associated companies, the United States emerged as the primary buyer of medical devices, followed by Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Chile, and the United Arab Emirates. Overall, exports grew in 82 out of 137 importing countries compared to 2022.
