Brazil Expands Global Agribusiness Reach with Record Market Openings

This May, Brazil has seen a historic milestone for its agribusiness, setting a new record for the number of trade agreements secured in a single month. According to the Secretariat of Commerce and International Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), Brazil successfully opened 15 new markets in 10 different countries over the past 31 days.

This achievement surpasses the previous record set in May 2020, which saw the opening of eight new markets in five countries. In May last year, seven new markets were established in seven countries, contributing to a historic total of 78 new markets in 39 countries throughout 2023. Under President Lula’s third term, Brazil has already opened 124 new markets in 51 countries.

May 2024 also stands out as the most successful month of the year so far, exceeding March’s ten new markets, January’s nine, February’s seven, and April’s five. In total, 46 new markets have been established in 27 countries this year, with notable achievements including fish exports to South Africa, Australia, and India; poultry exports to El Salvador and Lesotho; pork exports to Bhutan; and green coffee exports to Zambia.

The new market openings for 2024 span all continents:

Africa (5): South Africa, Botswana, Egypt, Lesotho, and Zambia.
Asia (12): Saudi Arabia, Armenia, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Philippines, India, Oman, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Singapore, and Turkey.
Europe (3): Great Britain, Belarus, and Russia.
Oceania (1): Australia.
Americas (6): Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, United States, Mexico, and Peru.

“The opening of new markets is a testament to the competitiveness and reliability of the Brazilian productive sector, recognized in more than 200 countries and territories,” said Roberto Perosa, Secretary of Commerce and International Relations. “This result is the fruit of the joint work led by Ministers Carlos Fávaro and Mauro Vieira, and especially our agricultural attachés in bilateral trade negotiations. It’s important to note that 65% of the openings in this administration occurred in regions where we have attachés. And there are still many more records to come.”

The expansion of international markets has been a significant driver of growth for Brazilian exports. In the first four months of the year, agribusiness accounted for 49.3% of Brazil’s total exports. The sector generated $52.39 billion in revenue during this period, marking a 3.7% increase from the $50.52 billion exported in the same period last year.
