Brazil expects to ship more live buffalo to the Arab countries

After the United Arab Emirates issued certification for the importation of live buffaloes from Brazil, the Brazilian Association of Buffalo Breeders (ABCB) forecasts increased exports. According to the president of ABCB, Caio Rossato, certification by the Emirates “comes at a good time”, as the opening of yet another market stimulates national production.
Rossato projects a great demand for the purchase of live buffalo, both for milk and meat production, and not only for the United Arab Emirates but for all Arab countries. “Nowadays, taking into account herd health issues, Brazil has great potential to be one of the biggest exporters of buffalo,” says the president of ABCB.
A researcher at the Eastern Amazon unit of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), José Ribamar Marques says that the Brazilian herd is of “excellent quality” and he believes that there is a great opportunity to sell animals to the Arabs. “They have a preference for live animals because they want to slaughter according to their religious precepts,” says Marques, recalling that among countries in the region, Egypt is the largest producer of buffalo.
India is the world’s largest exporter of live buffalo, but for religious reasons, it cannot exploit its herd of oxen and cows, also one of the largest in the world.
The most recent destinations for live buffalo from Brazil, according to Rosseto, were the Philippines, Venezuela, and Angola.
