Exports of machinery and equipment performed better in January 2023 than in the same month the previous year, increasing by 22%. The year began with an increase in all types of machinery exports totaling more than US$ 1 billion. The information is provided by the Brazilian Machinery and Equipment Industry Association (Abimaq).
The highlight was the logistics and civil construction sector, responsible for 32.6% of exports in the period. Next are components for the goods and capital industry, which accounted for 18.2% of the total. The main destinations are North America and Brazil’s South American neighbors.
On the other hand, imports started the year with a drop of 4.1% compared to the previous month but with a performance of 15.5% higher than in January 2022. China, the United States, Germany, and Italy are the main origins of Brazilian imports of machinery and equipment. Abimaq states that the sector’s performance for 2023 will depend on the national economy’s performance.
The sector maintains just over 390,000 jobs. In January, almost 5,000 jobs were created, according to the association.
