Brazil exports of turkey meat go through sharp drop in 2024

The Paraná State Department of Rural Economics recently released a report on the state’s farming outlook, which revealed a significant drop in Brazilian turkey meat exports during the first eight months of 2024. According to Agrostat Brasil, Brazil, as a whole, exported 38,054 tonnes of turkey meat during this eight-month period, generating $93.035 million in revenue. These figures represent a 19.8% reduction in volume and a sharp 54.6% decline in export revenue compared to the same period in 2023, when 47,451 tonnes were exported, bringing in $144.083 million.
Among the leading exporting states, Santa Catarina tops the list with $38.335 million and 16,009 tonnes, followed by Rio Grande do Sul with $35.067 million and 13,841 tonnes, and Paraná, which exported 8,180 tonnes, generating $19.550 million. Compared to the previous year, all states experienced a downturn: Paraná saw a 26.6% drop in export volume, Rio Grande do Sul decreased by 24.6%, and Santa Catarina fell by 10.8%. Paraná recorded the smallest revenue decline at 4.4%, while Rio Grande do Sul suffered the steepest loss at 45.2%.
The average price of fresh turkey meat, which accounted for 96.1% of total exports (36,577 tonnes), stood at $2,386.81 per tonne, reflecting a 12.7% decrease from the previous year’s average of $2,735.07 per tonne traded.
The main destinations for Brazilian turkey exports were Mexico (6,473 tonnes, $20.514 million), South Africa (6,428 tonnes, $9.005 million), Chile (4,949 tonnes, $14.970 million), the Netherlands (4,329 tonnes, $16.539 million), and Equatorial Guinea (1,705 tonnes, $2.659 million). Compared to the previous year, Mexico saw a 43.3% drop in import volume, South Africa reduced its purchases by 22.2%, Chile increased its imports by 50.2%, and Equatorial Guinea saw a rise of 45.2%.
