The Brazilian government presented a study to expand its maritime border beyond 200 nautical miles to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLPC) last week. The objective of the study is to show scientific technical data that demonstrates the country’s capacity to expand its continental platform area, gaining an area called Amazônia Azul.

According to the Brazilian Navy, the final decision should be announced in July this year, when the 50th session of the CLPC will take place. If the application is approved, Brazil will be allowed to explore natural resources in the defined area.
