Brazil imports more Portuguese wine, even during pandemic

The pandemic reduced the production and consumption of wine in Portugal, but the same was not true for the Brazilian consumer. On the contrary, Portuguese wine exports to Brazil have been increasing in volume and value.
Last year, Portugal exported 25 million liters of wine valued at 68 million euros to Brazil (23.6% more than in 2019), an increase of 26.4% compared to the previous year. “Brazil was the country that grew the most in Portuguese wine exports and became our biggest market in the world if we do not consider port wine, which has a substantial weight”, says Frederico Falcão, president of Vini Portugal.
See below for a comparison of the origins of the wine imported by Brazil since 2018. Data are from DataLiner:

“There was strong growth in the import of wines from Portugal”, says Carlos Abar, CEO of Product Audit Internacional, a company that provides information on products with high added value. It compares data and shows that between July 2019 and June 2020 2.1 million boxes were imported and that in the following year, between July 2020 and June 2021, this number rose to 3 million. “There was a record growth of Portuguese wine in Brazil and it is curious that the best seller was a white wine called Casal Garcia even though Brazilians mostly consume red wine,” he says.
