With the start of Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, which, in 2022, will take place from the beginning of April to early May, the Brazilian poultry industry is seeing increased exports of halal poultry meat, according to the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA).
According to the ABPA, Brazil, the world’s top halal chicken exporter, sold 1.915 million tonnes of chicken meat to the Islamic market in 2021, accounting for over half of all Brazilian exports in the sector – up from 4.6 million tonnes last year. The volume of halal chicken meat has climbed by 5.17 % in the first two months of 2022 compared to the same period last year, reaching 310.4 thousand tonnes.
Brazil exported halal poultry meat to 58 countries, thus invoicing US$ 3 billion in 2021, a number that is expected to grow even more in 2022 as exports have already totalled US$ 509 .7 million in the first two months of the year, up 25% from 2021’s first two months.
Since 2020, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been the most popular destination among these 58 countries. In 2021, it imported 389.4 thousand tonnes of halal chicken meat (equal to 8.7% of total industry exports), generating US$ 692.2 million in income.
This year, the UAE has further increased imports of Brazilian products. In the first two months, it imported 85.7 thousand tonnes, a volume 93.4% higher than the volume imported in the same period of 2021.
In February alone, the UAE took the lead among Brazilian chicken meat export destinations, surpassing China. The Middle Eastern country imported 42,800 tonnes, a volume 89.9% greater than that imported in the second month of 2021.

“Islamic nations were the first countries that bought Brazilian chicken meat in 1975. We have a solid partnership built with long-term increments projected. Evidence of this is an action that Brazil recently carried out at a business fair in Dubai called Gulfood, which arranged US$ 1 billion in exports just from negotiations held during the event. The Brazilian poultry industry is dedicated to complying with halal requirements, which has placed us in a strategic position to support the food security of Arab nations,” says ABPA president Ricardo Santin.
