The national machinery and equipment industry ended August with a 9% decrease in net revenue compared to the same period in 2021. Despite a 28.2% increase in exports to US$ 1.3 billion in August, domestic sales fell 12.9% year on year to R$21.9 billion. Abimaq, the association that represents manufacturers of mechanical capital goods, released the figures on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
In the sum of deliveries to the domestic market and exports, total sales in the sector were R$ 28.3 billion last month.
Purchases of machinery and industrial equipment in Brazil totaled R$ 34.7 billion in August, a drop of 6.1% year on year. Of this amount, US$ 2.3 billion correspond to imports, a sector of the economy that grew by 27.5% compared to the same month in 2021.
As the country imported more than it exported machines, the sector’s trade balance ended August with a deficit of US$ 1 billion, a balance 26.7% higher than in the same month last year.
On the margin – from July to August -sales of the machinery industry (both domestic and exports) rose 10.2% due to the 7.8% increase in domestic revenue and 25.5% in shipments abroad. Apparent consumption, considering the 16.8% rise in imports, rose 9.4%.
The total revenue of the Brazilian capital goods industry has fallen 5.1% since the beginning of the year, totaling R$ 205.8 billion between January and August. Domestic sales fell 6.9% to R$164 billion during this time period. Thus, the performance was not worse simply because exports increased by 28.2%, totaling US$ 7.9 billion in the year to August.
According to Abimaq’s balance sheet, purchases of machines in the country, including national and imported machinery, fell 7.2% this year, totaling R$ 256.1 billion in the first eight months. However, considering only imports, there was an increase of 13.3%, totaling US$ 15.9 billion in eight months.
