Mango exports from Brazil reached unprecedented levels in 2023, generating approximately US$ 315 million for the country. This figure beat the US$ 249 million seen in 2021, which had been the most profitable year until then. Export volumes saw a 15% increase compared to the previous year, totaling around 266,000 tonnes, according to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services, later reprocessed by Empraba’s Mango Market Observatory.
About 93% of Brazilian mango exports come from São Francisco Valley in the country’s Northeast region, and, especially the states Bahia and Pernambuco, which accounted for 47.36% and 45.42% of exports, respectively. The remainder came from the states of São Paulo (3.25%), Rio Grande do Norte (2.54%), and Ceará (0.79%).
The positive results were achieved despite a slight reduction in overall domestic throughput in 2023, which was estimated at 1.2 million tonnes – slightly less than the 1.5 million tonnes recorded in 2022.
The chart below uses DataLiner data to draft a month-on-month analysis of Brazilian mango exports (HS code 08045020) between January 2022 and January 2024.

Mango in Brazil and worldwide
Brazil ranks sixth among the world’s largest mango producers, trailing only India (26 million tonnes), Indonesia (4.1 million), China (3.8 million), Pakistan (2.8 million), and Mexico (2.5 million tonnes).
About 80% of the mango produced within Brazil is earmarked for domestic consumption, while 20% is exported. The European Union is the primary market for Brazilian mangoes abroad, with the Netherlands receiving the largest share (45.3% in 2023) due to its port of Rotterdam. The United States was the second-largest buyer of Brazilian mangoes, at 18.35%, followed by Spain (17.93%), the United Kingdom (6.06%), and Portugal (3.95%).
Although mango is present throughout the country, Brazil’s Northeast and Southeast regions account for 99% of national production. Among these, the Northeast stands out, holding 82% of the output.
