Brazil navigates concerns over future black bean supply availability

In the first half of this year, black beans have taken center stage in Brazil’s export economy. Despite their essential role in the Brazilian diet due to their richness in proteins, fibers, and minerals, this market faces challenges due to supply and demand fluctuations, impacting prices and the economy.
The Brazilian Institute of Beans and Pulses (Ibrafe) anticipates a bountiful harvest in 2023, potentially yielding a surplus of over 100 thousand tons for the domestic market. However, this surge in production may discourage producers, leading to reduced planted areas in the next harvest and eventual scarcity of the grain, thereby resulting in anticipated price hikes by 2025.
“To shield Brazilian consumers from soaring prices and scarcity, it is imperative to incentivize the export of black beans and other surplus varieties, such as the newest addition, sesame. By bolstering supply in the domestic market, we can manage prices and ensure sufficient supply for the population. Moreover, bean exports can generate additional revenue for producers and the country’s economy, fostering sectoral development and facilitating income diversification,” elucidated Marcelo Eduardo Lüders, President of IBRAFE.
According to the entity, promoting bean production and exports is vital for ensuring the food security of Brazilians, mitigating price fluctuations, and guaranteeing access to staple food in our diet. The government and agribusiness institutions must collaborate in fortifying the bean production chain and ensuring its availability in the national market.
