Brazil needs to increase rice, beans output to avoid imports
Jun, 20, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202324
Increasing the production of rice and beans is crucial for Brazil to avoid depending on imports. Conab (National Supply Company) has warned that these two staple ingredients in the Brazilian diet are reaching their consumption limit within the country. While importing the two items from neighboring countries is possible, such a scenario would lead to increased prices.
Projections indicate that rice production will fall below 10 million tonnes by the end of the 2023 season. This not only represents the lowest volume in the past 25 years but also falls short of meeting domestic demand, according to Conab.
While bean production is being affected by rising temperatures, the current output is sufficient to fulfill the domestic market’s needs for now. Conab estimates that the grain’s output will remain at the same level as last year, around three million tonnes.
Nevertheless, a joint study conducted by Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) and USP (University of São Paulo) highlights that Brazil will need to increase its bean production by 44% by 2050 to meet future demands.
