Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Tereza Cristina, met with the Indonesian Minister of Agriculture, Amran Sulaiman, on Monday (20 May) with the objective of discussing the opening of the Indonesian market to Brazilian meat.
The meeting in Jakarta was the last stage of the Brazilian tour of Asia and allowed the Minister to request an answer from the Indonesians about the technical visits to several Brazilian slaughterhouses in April 2018.
According to the minister, Brazil is able to supply Indonesian animal protein demand, which is mainly beef, offering lower prices than meat from Australia the country’s largest meat supplier. Indonesia has around 270 million inhabitants.
The Indonesian minister called for the reduction of tariffs on palm oil imported by Brazil. Currently, Brazil charges 20%; the Indonesians have requested that the tariff is reduced to 2.5%, the same as is applied to soy.
According to Minister Sulaiman, Indonesia buys Brazilian soybeans in large quantities and they are the only exporters of palm oil to Brazil. In addition, tariff adjustment would benefit small Indonesian producers. Tereza Cristina promised to evaluate the request. Indonesia also wants to expand its exports to Brazil, selling special fruits such as mangosteens and snake fruit.
