Brazil opens new markets in Vietnam, Thailand, Turkey and New Zealand for corn meal exports

The Brazilian government welcomed the opening of markets in Vietnam, Thailand, Turkey, and New Zealand for the export of corn meal, one of the by-products of corn ethanol production, technically known as DDG (distiller’s dried grains) or DDGS (distiller’s dried grains with solubles).
DDGS/DDG are generated in the process of corn ethanol production in the second harvest. The ingredient is a protein and energy source in animal feed formulations for ruminants, swine, poultry, fish, and shrimp.
According to the Brazilian Export and Investments Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), projections indicate that by 2031/2032, Brazilian corn ethanol production will jump to 10.88 billion liters, resulting in approximately 6.5 million tons of DDG/DDGS.
The possibility of selling to these new markets strengthens the country’s commitment to agribusiness and expanding the supply of inputs for animal protein production.
Currently, Brazil is the world’s third-largest corn producer, trailing only China (2nd) and the United States (1st). About 10% of the grains are allocated to ethanol production during the second corn crop in the country. Also referred to as “safrinha,” this crop is planted in the same spot following the primary harvest, during the same farming year, and requires no additional land, dramatically lowering carbon dioxide emissions.
According to Brazilian government metrics, corn ethanol has one of the lowest carbon footprints among all ethanol plants in the country (around 17gCO2/MJ).
As per the 1st Grain Harvest Survey 2023/24, released in October by the National Supply Company (Conab), the total expected corn production in the 2023/24 harvest is 119.4 million tons. It is estimated that Brazil will export around 38 million tons of corn.
