Brazil paves the way for new market in chicken meat exports
May, 20, 2024 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202420
The Brazilian government has announced a significant milestone in its export sector: access to the Lesotho market for Brazilian-produced chicken meat. This achievement is the result of coordinated efforts between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa). The agreement, finalized after months of negotiations that began last November, marks a new chapter in Brazil’s export strategy.
Lesotho imports approximately 8,000 tons of poultry meat annually. Given Brazil’s dominance with 38% of the global market share in poultry, this new market access presents a promising opportunity for further export expansion. In 2023, Brazil set a record by exporting over $9.61 billion worth of chicken meat, equivalent to 5 million tons.
Brazil is a large protein exporter and has been gaining more and more space in this market. The chart below displays Brazilian poultry meat exports between Jan 2021 and Mar 2024. The data is from DataLiner.

Since early 2023, Brazil has significantly expanded its international market reach, securing access for 121 new agricultural products across 51 countries.
