Brazil poised to invest BRL 4.7 in crop transportation logistics in 2024

The federal government is poised to invest R$ 4.7 billion in highways and railways in 2024, the so-called “agro corridors.” These are some of the most important logistics routes for the nation’s crops. Investments include R$ 2.66 billion for the country’s Northern Arc and R$ 2.05 billion for the South and Southeast regions.
These funds will come from the National Plan for Crop Transportation 2023/24, unveiled on Tuesday (6/2) during an event at the Ministry of Transportation. In total, 60 infrastructure projects are planned across the country.
On highways, Renan Filho stated that the goal is to increase the percentage of roads in good condition from 67% to 80%. Talking specifically about roads that link to ports in the Northern Arc, such as the BR 163 between Mato Grosso and Pará, the percentage aimed goes to 90%.
The government seeks to facilitate pavement licensing for BRs 158 and 242 in Mato Grosso; BR 135 in Bahia and Maranhão; and BR 242 in Tocantins. Additionally, it plans 13 concession auctions, raising R$ 122 billion in new investments.
According to Minister Renan Filho, ten of these auctions are directly related to the agro corridors, involving investments of R$ 95 billion. These include sections of BR 364 in Rondônia, BRs 070/174/364 between Mato Grosso and Rondônia, BR 060/364 between Goiás and Mato Grosso, and BR 060/452 in Goiás, among others.
The National Plan for CropTransportation 2023/24 predicts the passage of 56 million tonnes of grains solely through the 7,300 kilometers of roads leading to ports in the Northern Arc, such as Barcarena and Santarém in Pará.
Minister Renan Filho emphasized that the R$ 3.6 billion investments made nationwide in 2023 have already improved the quality of the road network and increased cargo movement in this region. He also highlighted the rise in the inbound flow of inputs through the north. “Reverse logistics can generate much more activity in this region,” he said.
Last year, the Northern Arc alone received R$ 2 billion in investments. This year, the planned amount is R$ 2.6 billion. Planned works include crossings in Itapoã do Oeste, Jaru, and Ji-Paraná in Rondônia; restoration of BR 158 in Pará; duplication of BR 135 in Maranhão; construction of a bridge over the Parnaíba River on BR 330 in Piauí; recovery of BR 242 in Bahia; and construction of the Xambioá Bridge in Tocantins.
In rail transportation, the Ministry aims to intensify work on the West-East Integration Railway (Fiol) 2, with new tracks; and resume work on Fiol 1, Transnordestina, and the Midwest Integration Railway (Fico).
South and Southeast
In the South and Southeast, investments will increase from R$ 1.5 billion in 2023 to R$ 2.05 billion in 2024. Planned works include improvements to the road network and concession of two lots in Paraná.
Key projects include the Monte Alegre junction on BRs 153 and 365 in Minas Gerais; construction of the Luiz Alves Bridge on BR 080 in Goiás; duplication of BR 163 in Paraná; duplication of BRs 470 and 280 in Santa Catarina; and duplication of BRs 116 and 386 in Rio Grande do Sul.
In the railway sector, the government plans to complete the North-South Railway. Minister Renan Filho stated that in recent years, the ceiling on public spending has left a backlog of infrastructure investment limits in the country.
