South Africa and Senegal ranked second and third year to date through May among the leading importers of poultry genetic material, including hatching eggs and day-old chicks, from Brazil. According to national industry lobby ABPA, year to date through May, South Africa, which has recently started importing, bought 2,955 tonnes, followed by Senegal at 2,157 tonnes. Top importer is Mexico, at 4,750 tonnes.
“Brazil’s poultry genetic trade has been reshaped, with African nations as a leading international destination. Brazil’s health status has been crucial to keep achieving good results in the exports of such a high value-added segment, especially to markets that have been impacted by the avian influenza,” said ABPA President Ricardo Santin in a statement.
Poultry genetic exports up, revenue down
Brazil’s poultry genetic exports in May added up to 2,650 tonnes, a jump of 10.9% from the same period last year. But revenue reached USD 18.394 million, down 10.6% year on year. Year-to-date exports are up 2.2% in volume, to 12,855 tonnes, while revenue is down 12.8%, to USD US$ 98.587 million.
