Brazil records 7.34% growth in inland navigation throughout 2023

From January to May this year, the use of inland navigation in cargo transport amounted to 51.62 million tonnes, according to data from Brazil’s National Waterway Agency Antaq.
This figure represents an increase of 7.34% from the same five months in 2022. It is worth mentioning that all hydrographic regions in the country presented a positive balance this year.
Brazil’s main highlight this year was the Amazon River region, through which 32.52 million tonnes of cargo passed between January and May 2022, up 10% compared to the same period last year. The region accounted for almost two-thirds of all cargo transported by inland routes this year.
The hydrographic region of the Paraguay region had the most substantial percentage growth throughout this period, with 52.9% more cargo, or 3.3 million tonnes transported. The Tocantins-Araguaia river routes were responsible for a third of all inland cargo movement in the Jan-May period, with 19 million tonnes on record, up 0.8% year-on-year.
Goods
The commodity with the highest percentage growth between January and May was corn, which grew 103.37% compared to the same period in 2022. In all, there were 3.22 million tonnes transported in Brazilian rivers.
The commodity with the highest movement rate was soybeans, with almost 20 million tonnes, expressing a positive variation of 17.16% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Another highlight is the transport of bauxite. During this period, 7.42 million tonnes were transported. The number represents a growth of 5.67% compared to 2022.
Terminals
Among the inland port facilities, Terminal Trombetas stood out for its impressive handling of almost 7 million tonnes in this period, growing by 11%.
Another facility that saw a significant increase was Terminal Hidrovias do Brasil Miritituba, which handled more than 5.19 million tonnes of cargo in the first five months of the year, up by 18%. Port of Santarém, in Pará, completed the top three.
Long-haul navigation on inland routes was also strong, with more than 24 million tonnes transported from January to May (a rise of 12.66%). Inland Navigation followed with 17.9 million tonnes moved (an increase of 8.9% compared to the same period in 2022), while Cabotage on inland waterways carried 9.6 million tonnes of cargo.
