Brazil records falling turkey meat exports

According to the farming review bulletin developed by the Department of Rural Economy (Deral), released between July 26 and August 1, Brazil exported 29,571 tons of turkey meat in the first half of 2024, generating $74.377 million in revenue. This marks a 16.7% decline in volume and a 32.2% drop in revenue compared to the same period in the previous year, when 35,515 tons were exported, yielding $109.798 million.
The exporting states that stood out during this period were Santa Catarina, with $32.820 million and 13,164 tonnes; Rio Grande do Sul, with $25.534 million and 10,121 tonnes; and Paraná, with $15.957 million and 6,269 tonnes. For the first half of 2023, these states reported: Santa Catarina with $38.696 million and 13,452 tonnes; Rio Grande do Sul with $46.227 million and 13,258 tonnes; and Paraná with $24.826 million and 8,795 tonnes.
The performance of turkey meat exports broken down by state showed volume declines of 28.7% in Paraná, 23.7% in Rio Grande do Sul, and 2.1% in Santa Catarina. In terms of revenue, drops spread across 35.7% in Paraná, 44.8% in Rio Grande do Sul, and 15.2% in Santa Catarina. The average price of fresh turkey meat, which constitutes 95.8% of total exports (28,340 tons and $69.375 million), was $2,447.96 per ton, a 12.8% decrease from the previous year’s average price of $2,807.79 per ton.
The top destinations for Brazilian turkey meat exports in the first half of 2024 were Mexico (5,550 tonnes, $18.632 million), South Africa (5,420 tonnes, $7.565 million), Chile (4,313 tonnes, $12.927 million), the Netherlands (2,944 tonnes, $11.585 million), and Iraq (1,282 tonnes, $1.550 million). Compared to the previous year, volume changes were: Mexico (-43.6%), South Africa (-12.8%), Chile (+110.7%), the Netherlands (-47.3%), and Iraq (+100%).
In Brazil, BRFoods (formed from the merger of Perdigão and Sadia) and JBS, operating in Rio Grande do Sul (JBS), Santa Catarina, and Paraná (BRFoods), lead the production of turkey meat and derivatives. According to the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), 133,290 tonnes of turkey meat were produced in 2023, an 18.1% decrease from the 162,700 tonnes produced in 2022.
Turkey meat production was divided between the domestic market (47.61%) and exports (52.39%), with major exporting destinations including the Americas (40.3%: 28,144 tonnes), Africa (35.19%: 24,573 tonnes), and the European Union (15.51%: 10,833 tonnes). Santa Catarina accounted for 39.7% of the total, Rio Grande do Sul for 37.1%, and Paraná for 23.2% of the states’ share. Of this volume, industrialized products made up 10.77% (2,286 tonnes), and whole products made up 6.81% (126 tonnes), with 82.42% of the volume being cuts.
