Brazil recovered 508 km of economically navigated inland roads in 2020

On December 10, ANTAQ (the national waterway transport agency) released the new edition of the study on “economically navigated” inland waterways (VEN 2020). The survey, carried out every two years, shows that the length of economically navigated waterways in Brazil reached 19,167 kilometers in 2020, an increase of 551 kilometers in relation to the data collected in 2018.
The first study, for the years 2010 and 2011, found the existence of 20,955 km of “economically navigated” inland roads in the country. The others presented data for 2013, 2016, and 2018, with the following results: 20,037, 19,463, and 18,616 km, respectively. Now, there are 551 kilometers more than what was found in the study carried out by the Agency in 2018, representing a growth of 2.96%.
According to the director of ANTAQ and the reporter on the matter, Adalberto Tokarski, the ports of the “Amazonian Arch”, for example, handled 360 million tons of cargo in 2020, representing more than 30% of the Brazilian port movement. This shows the importance and potential of the region, which currently has 9 port complexes, comprising 68 port facilities, with 29 operating in cabotage and long-haul, and 23 exclusively in long-haul.
Economically navigated inland waterways are those in which there is transport by an Empresa Brasileira de Navegação (EBN) or state company providing services in cargo longitudinal, passenger longitudinal, or mixed longitudinal (passenger and cargo) navigations.
