The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply notified the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) about an outbreak of classical swine flu registered in September in Ceará, a state that is not part of the zone recognized as free of the disease in the parents.
According to the OIE, eight animals died and one was sacrificed in the municipality of Marco. The pigs belonged to a subsistence farm.
The disease, also called swine flu or pig cholera, is viral but is not transmitted to humans. The diagnosis was confirmed by the Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory in Pedro Leopoldo, Minas Gerais, and the property was banned by the state veterinary service.
According to the Ministry, investigations are underway to identify the origin and epidemiological links. “The eradication measures will be implemented with the slaughter of animals on the property and contacts within the same epidemiological unit”, says the ministry.
It is the first outbreak of classical swine flu registered in the country since 2019, when cases occurred in Piauí, another state that is also not part of the zone recognized as free of the disease in Brazil.
It is worth noting that Brazilian pork exports have been growing year upon year. The chart below shows the history of Brazil’s pork exports:

In Brazil, 15 states and the Federal District are in a disease-free zone. The region accounts for more than 95% of the entire Brazilian swine industry and has not registered cases since January 1998.
