Brazil: rice exports dip in November while imports surge

In November, paddy rice exports reached 139.9 thousand tonnes, equivalent to US$56.6 million, according to Abiarroz (Brazilian Rice Industry Association), which compiled data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (MDIC). Compared to the same month in 2022, there was a 5.2% decline in export volume and a 4.4% increase in revenue.

Brazil exported 1.7 million tonnes from January to November, generating US$599.6 million. Compared to the same period in 2022, this represents a 6.5% decrease in volume and a 5.6% increase in revenue.

Out of the total exported in November, 92.5 thousand tonnes corresponded to processed rice, showing a 160.3% growth year-on-year. The revenue from this rice increased by 160.8% in the same comparison frame, reaching US$35.9 million.

The primary destinations for processed rice exports, with higher added value, were Cuba, Senegal, Peru, the United States, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago, Guatemala, Barbados, and Israel.

Imports

Last month, Brazilian rice imports totaled 97.7 thousand tonnes, marking a 3.7% increase compared to November 2022. These purchases amounted to US$42.7 million, representing a 51.2% annual increase.

The leading suppliers were Paraguay, Uruguay, Italy, and Argentina.

From January to November, the country imported 1.35 million tonnes, with expenses reaching US$491.9 million, marking a 21% increase in volume and a 52.8% increase in revenue.
