Brazil rice exports exceed 1.8 mln tonnes in 2022, say industry association

From January to November 2022, rice exports from Brazil totaled 1.83 million tonnes, with revenues of US$ 568.9 million, compared to 981.6 thousand tonnes shipped in the same period in 2021, with revenues of US$ 316.2 million. The year-to-date result represents a 186% increase in volume and an 80% surge in revenue. The figures were released by Abiarroz (Brazilian Rice Industry Association) on Friday (9), based on data from the Ministry of Economy.

According to the association, rice shipments totaled 159.7 thousand tonnes in November, worth $55.4 million. Exports totaled 26.3 thousand tonnes in the same month of 2021, with a revenue of $9.94 million.

Abiarroz’s Director of International Affairs, Gustavo Trevisan, says that the cereal’s export volume in 2022 is near the association’s projection, which expects to end the year with shipments of around 2 million tonnes.

Trevisan also explains why there was such a significant disparity in the percentages of goods shipped abroad and export revenues. “This percentage difference – 186% in volume and 80% in revenue – is due to a higher raw material share in shipments during this period,” Trevisan explains.

Processed rice

The export manager at Abiarroz, Carolina Matos, adds that foreign sales of processed rice, with higher added value, reached 483.7 thousand tonnes from January to November, with revenues of US$ 167.6 million.

Last month, exports of processed rice totaled 35.4 thousand tonnes, with foreign exchange earnings of US$ 13.8 million. The leading importers were Algeria, the United States, Cape Verde, Peru, Venezuela, Angola, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Bolivia, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
