Brazil Rice Production Grows, But Exports Drop
Apr, 25, 2024 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202417
The projection for the 2024/25 rice harvest in Brazil stands at 10.5 million tons, marking a 2.5% increase compared to the previous harvest. Acreage is expected to expand by 4.5%, while average yields are forecasted to decrease by 1.9%.
However, despite this positive outlook, Brazil saw a reduction in rice exports during the first quarter of 2024. The country exported 267.6 thousand tons of rice during this period, marking a decline of 24.7% compared to the same period in the previous year. In March 2024 alone, exports amounted to 85.4 thousand tons, representing a drop of 26.2% compared to March 2023.
Brazil currently holds the ninth position in the global ranking of rice exporters, with total exports reaching 1.2 million tons during the 2023 harvest.
These figures suggest that despite the increase in rice production, export volumes experienced a decline in early 2024. Nonetheless, Brazil maintains its significance as a key player in the global rice market, retaining its position among the top ten exporters worldwide.
Export competitiveness is subject to various factors, including production costs, currency fluctuations, and prevailing international market conditions.
