Brazil sales of hatching eggs fell by 25% month-on-month

After reaching, in March, the highest volume of the last three years, last April, exports of hatching eggs from Brazil intended for the production of broilers fell by more than a quarter of the volume recorded in the previous month. As a result, sales only reached approximately 15.6 million units, a volume that, despite the substantial monthly decline, was about 9% higher than in the same month of 2021.
Total sales recorded in the first four months of 2022 amount to 68.9 million units, approximately an 18% rise compared to the same four-month period in 2021.
The sale of 191,400 boxes of 30 dozen eggs, the result obtained interrupts a series of increments that started in the third quarter of 2020, immediately after the total exported had dropped to one of the lowest volumes of all time (the first four months of 2020 after the beginning of the pandemic).
Notwithstanding, the declining trend began earlier, in 2019, not because external demand suffered a retraction but due to strong and growing internal demand, a factor that led producers to reorient sales. Therefore, after reaching a historical record in the first four months of 2019, the exported volume fell by almost half from September to December.
Apparently, the phenomenon will repeat itself in 2022. The demand for hatching eggs (and/or day-old chicks) is firm, both in Brazil and externally, but the production is insufficient to meet needs, perhaps because the increase in broiler breeders grew just over half a percent. As a result, the decrease in export volume observed in April could be attributed to a shift in production to the domestic market.
