Brazil sees surge in both dairy exports and imports in October

In October, dairy imports in Brazil increased by 26.1% compared to the previous month, totaling 194 million liters in milk equivalent, according to Secex data. This surge can be attributed to the internalized volume of powdered milk, which rebounded last month after decreasing in September at even more competitive prices than the domestic product. The imported powdered milk averaged $3.20/kg, a 4.4% drop from September 2023. In contrast, the average value of the same derivative exported by Brazil was much higher at $8.97/kg.
Powdered milk purchases, representing 78.9% of the total imports, reached 153.3 million liters in milk equivalent in October 2023, a 30.3% increase compared to the previous month and an 11% rise over the same period in 2022. Of the total acquired, 60.1% came from Argentina, and 32.6% came from Uruguay. Cheese acquisitions, accounting for 20.4% of dairy imports, totaled 39.6 million liters in milk equivalent, a 12.5% increase from the volume acquired in September, according to Secex data.
On the other hand, exports grew by 25.6% from September to October, totaling approximately 8.6 million liters in milk equivalent. Compared to October of the previous year, the increase was even more significant at 73.2% due to the growth in powdered milk shipments, reaching 1 million liters in milk equivalent in October 2023, compared to just 50 thousand liters a year ago. In October, cheese was Brazil’s most-sold dairy product, representing 32% of the total exported.
With 2.7 million liters in milk equivalent shipped, cheese sales recorded a 92.6% increase compared to September and a 39% increase compared to October 2022. Condensed milk exports, accounting for 29.3% of the total shipped, totaled 2.5 million liters in milk equivalent, a volume 2% lower than September but 67% higher than October 2022.
