Brazilian beef shipments reached a new high in September, totaling 231,450 tonnes, according to the Brazilian Meatpacking Association Abrafrigo, which assessed data from the country’s Foreign Trade Secretariat. Until then, the highest monthly volume of shipments had been recorded in August of this year, when 230,200 tonnes of beef left the country.
The performance last month was 6% higher than in September 2021. Revenue grew 10.5%, comparatively speaking, to US$ 1.32 billion.
As usual, China played a central role in the increase of foreign sales. The country bought 137,700 tonnes in September, almost 6,000 tonnes more than in August. As a result, the Chinese share in Brazilian exports rose from 47.5% to 52.8%.
China has increased imports to secure supplies for the anniversary celebrations of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, which began last Saturday (October 1) and runs until Friday (October 7), and also to build stocks for the Lunar New Year in early 2023.

The association says, in a note, that 108 countries increased their purchases of Brazilian beef this year and that 52 reduced their imports.
China remains Brazil’s biggest buyer, with 924,400 tonnes in 2022 – in the first nine months of 2021, the country imported 713,800 tonnes. Revenue from sales to the Chinese rose from US$ 3.8 billion to US$ 6.2 billion in the same period.
The United States, the second largest importer of Brazilian animal protein, bought 128,900 tonnes between January and September, a volume 56.5% greater than last year. In turn, imports from Egypt, the third in the ranking, increased by 84.4% to 87,500 tonnes.
