Brazil sets new record for beef exports in September

Brazilian beef exports reached a new record in September 2024, with shipments totaling 286,750 tonnes, generating revenue of $1.258 billion. This volume marks a 7.12% increase compared to the previous record set in July this year. September’s revenue stands out as the third highest in the history of the sector’s exports, surpassed only by August and September 2022, when average beef prices peaked at $5,900 and $5,700 per tonne, respectively, due to pandemic influences.

In comparison to August 2024, there was a significant increase of 15.6% in exported volume and 17.4% in revenue, according to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce, and Services (MDIC), compiled by the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries (Abiec).

According to Antônio Jorge Camardelli, president of Abiec, the rise in exports reflects ongoing efforts by the private sector, in partnership with the Federal Government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), the Foreign Ministry, the MDIC, and the Brazilian Agency for Promotion of Exports and Investments (ApexBrasil). “We are committed to expanding the presence of Brazilian beef in international markets, focusing on diversifying destinations and strengthening our foothold in traditional markets such as China,” Camardelli emphasized.

Currently, Brazil exports beef to over 150 markets worldwide. The Brazilian Beef project continues to be a cornerstone of the promotion and expansion strategy, aiming to ensure competitiveness and increase the presence of Brazilian beef in major global markets.

“The September figures demonstrate that Brazil is not only established as one of the world’s largest beef suppliers but is also prepared to meet the growing demand for high-quality food and food security. Our competitiveness stems from continuous investment in technology, traceability, and sustainability throughout the entire production chain,” Camardelli added.

January to September 2024

From January to September 2024, exports totaled 2.1 million tonnes of beef, generating $9.16 billion in revenue. Compared to the first nine months of 2023, shipments increased by 28.3%, while revenue grew by 20%.

China accounted for 44.5% of Brazil’s beef exports year-to-date, increasing its purchases by 10%. However, revenue fell by 0.9%, reflecting adjustments in average prices.

The United States saw significant growth, with a 58% increase in import volume and a 48.7% rise in revenue, totaling 147,000 tonnes and $867.4 million, respectively.

Another highlight was the United Arab Emirates, which has solidified its position as an important hub for the Middle East region. Shipments to the UAE surged by 162%, rising from 45,700 tonnes to 120,000 tonnes when comparing 2023 and 2024 totals. Revenue more than doubled, with a 168% increase from $203 million to $547 million.

The top 15 destinations for Brazilian beef recorded growth in volume for the year to date in 2024, particularly notable increases in exports to Mexico, Algeria, the Philippines, and Turkey, reflecting part of the exports to Iran.
