Brazil sets new record in fertilizer imports
Nov, 03, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202141
Brazil imported 29.1 million tons of fertilizers in the first nine months of this year, a new record for the period. The import volume was 20% greater than that registered in the same period last year when imports totaled 24.6 million tons.
The increase occurred as a result of the expansion of soy, corn, and cotton planting areas and the so-called “spot” purchases, made “on the spot” or in a sporadic manner. The information comes from the October logistics bulletin from CONAB (the national supply company).

However, the public company highlighted that producers and traders of agricultural inputs reported delays in fertilizer deliveries. For example, according to reports, the available truck fleet cannot keep up with the increase in volume sent from the ports to Mato Grosso.
According to Conab, there is no indication so far of a problem in the supply of fertilizers for this harvest, even with China’s temporary suspension of their fertilizer exports. In the last ten years, Brazilian imports of Chinese fertilizers grew 606.13%, from 674,900 tons in 2012 to 4.09 million tons in 2021.
“What is most worrying in this scenario is that according to data from ANDA (the national association for the diffusion of fertilizers), Brazil produces between 16% and 20% of domestic consumption. In other words, the country is highly dependent on the foreign market. Brazilian and global demand is growing; there is a need for special attention, including with the logistical infrastructure”, says the CONAB bulletin.
