Brazil to become self-sufficient in wheat production in 5 years, says Embrapa

Brazil will become self-sufficient in wheat production in up to 5 years. The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) president, Celso Luiz Moretti, made the prognosis.
“We saw an estimated demand of 13 million tonnes this year, but Brazil is going to produce 9 million tonnes. In other words, we believe that in 5 years, Brazil may become self-sufficient in wheat production at this pace,” he argued.
According to the president of Embrapa, after Brazil adapted wheat production to Cerrado soil, the country began to entertain the prospect of self-sufficiency.
Traditionally, wheat is produced in colder regions such as southern Brazil, Argentina, Canada, the United States, Russia, and Ukraine. Thus, grain is one of the few commodities that Brazil imports.

“We began working with wheat genetic enhancement more than 40 years ago. From 2010 onwards, when we started bringing wheat to the Cerrado, we began to adapt it to that tropical savannah-like ecosystem. These varieties have grown in an unusual way, which has impressed people all around the world who are familiar with wheat cultivated in cold climates. Embrapa demonstrated that it is possible to grow and harvest wheat in the tropics,” he added.
World wheat production is around 779 million tons. With the war between Russia and Ukraine — which account for 30% of this production — prices have increased. On the other hand, with the increase in domestic production, Brazil may have improved its capacity for imports and domestic consumption.
