Brazil intends to export soybeans, corn, and other products through Peru’s Chancay Port, as reported by the state-owned agency Andina. The Brazilian Minister of Planning and Budget, Simone Tebet, expressed interest in the port during a visit earlier this week, according to the Peruvian Minister of Economy and Finance, José Arista. In Arista’s account, Tebet stated that she would directly discuss the possibilities of exporting Brazilian products through this port with the Brazilian president.
Tebet noted that Peru’s Chancay Port represents the largest Chinese investment in South America and emphasized that it will reduce travel time to Asia by up to 10 days, according to a statement from the Ministry of Planning and Budget. “Exports and imports will become cheaper, increasing the competitiveness of our products and lowering prices for the population,” said the minister.
The terminal is being constructed by the Chinese company Cosco Shipping Ports, which holds a 60% stake in the port, while Peru’s Volcan holds 40%, according to information from the Brazilian ministry. In a statement, the ministry mentioned that the investment amounts to approximately US$ 3.6 billion (R$ 17.8 billion), with the first phase of the project expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
