Brazil to suspend beef production for export to China

The Ministry of Agriculture determined on October 19 that slaughterhouses authorized to export beef to the Chinese market should suspend production destined for the Asian country. Tuesday was the 45th consecutive day that Brazilian beef exports to China have been suspended.
On September 4, following a sanitary protocol between the two countries, Brazil voluntarily suspended its sales to the Chinese market after the confirmation of two atypical cases of “mad cow” disease in Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais. Although sales were halted by the decision of the Brazilian government, it is up to China to determine the end of the embargo; to date, this has not occurred.
Minister Tereza Cristina offered to personally go to China to deal with the issue but has not yet received any signal from the General Administration of Customs (GACC). Sources cite that they have “promptly” provided all the information requested by the Chinese and that the technical level of the Brazilian government is also available to clarify any doubts on the subject.
