The minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply, Marcos Montes, reaffirmed on Monday, May 9, in Cairo, Brazil’s commitment to global food security. When participating in the opening of the Brazil-Egypt Forum, promoted by the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (CCAB), he highlighted Brazil’s strong interest in expanding imports of fertilizers from Egypt.

“Brazil is a provider of safe, affordable, and nutritious food. We want to deepen the ties that unite us with the Egyptian people, and trade is one way of doing that: an art that has been admirably practiced here for millennia. With an adequate supply of fertilizers, we will reach the FAO’s goals for the supply of food to the world in 2050”, highlighted the Minister.

The Mapa delegation presented the National Fertilizer Plan’s goals and expectations for the long-term supply of fertilizers to ensure global food production.

Several business people showed interest in supplying fertilizers to Brazil. The delegation also discussed the need to strengthen the rapprochement between business people and investors from both countries to make business possible.

Egypt has good participation in the global supply of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers, in addition to its mixtures in special fertilizers, albeit its share in the Brazilian market isn’t so expressive as of yet.

Diversification

Expanding the supply of animal protein from Brazil, as well as the challenges for the coming years, were part of the conversation at the CCAB. The minister recalled that Egypt is Brazil’s primary export destination on the African continent, with enormous potential for partnership growth and diversification in both exports and imports.

Since 2019, 21 new markets have been opened for Brazilian agribusiness products in Egypt, such as Brazilian animal protein, 11 types of seeds, and dairy products. In addition, the Brazilian market was opened to import citrus, garlic, and grapes from Egypt.

The international agenda will last until the end of the week, with technical and political meetings with Arab countries in Africa and the Middle East.
