The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (Mapa) participated in the largest fish trade fair in the world, Seafood Expo Global, held in Barcelona to pick up on negotiations for exporting fish to the European Union (EU).
“The goal is to make progress in creating awareness so that we can resume exporting to Europe. We hope to hold a Brazilian stand at the fair next year with other businesses to consolidate all efforts since 2019,” highlighted the Fish Farming and Fisheries secretary at Mapa, Jairo Gund.
Brazilian officials also met with UK officials to discuss the opening of that market, which operates under the same laws as the European Union. Mapa’s Secretary of Commerce and International Relations also attended Seafood Expo.
Fish exports from Brazil to the European Union have been suspended since 2017 after the bloc raised concerns in an audit mission. The Secretariat of Fish Farming and Fisheries has been working together with the Secretariat of Agricultural Defense to implement hygienic-sanitary control measures in the entire fish production chain in compliance with the requirements of the European community.
Eduardo Lobo Nasvlasky, who also participated in Seafood, highlighted the importance of the European market for Brazilian fishing. “Brazil has to participate in this common European market, it has to go back to exporting, and the Brazilian mission has strongly worked to achieve that here.”
