Brazilian beef shipments to China make up for lost ground

Exports of fresh beef cuts from Brazil achieved the highest mark in May 2023, also a record compared to the same month in previous years. According to the research center Cepea, such a number hike is due to the intensification of shipments to China. Government data show that Brazil shipped 168 thousand tonnes in May, up 52.7% from the previous month and 10% above May 2022.
Shipments to China alone stood at 54 thousand tonnes in March 2023 and 40.5 thousand in April due to the shipment halt ordered after a case of mad cow disease in northern Brazil. In May 2023, 110.98 thousand tonnes were sent abroad, up 15.7% from last year.
The chart below uses DataLiner data to show Brazil’s beef exports in containers to China between Jan 2019 and Apr 2023.

Cepea researchers commented that the last time exports to China exceeded 100 thousand tonnes was October 2022, with 128.57 thousand tonnes. Preliminary government data on June exports prove China’s engagement with the Brazilian market remains firm.
By the end of the second week of June, Brazil had shipped 70.32 thousand tonnes of beef cuts, at a daily average of 11.72 thousand tonnes. If this pace is kept until the end of the month, exports may top 240 thousand tonnes.
