China’s newfound appreciation for coffee has surged over the last decade, and more recently, the beverage has become a popular trend among younger generations. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), China now consumes around 6 million kilograms of coffee annually.

This shift in Chinese consumption had a major impact on Brazil in 2023, as coffee exports to China skyrocketed by 275% compared to the previous year, according to the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé), which is involved in new trade agreements with the country.

As a result, China has jumped from 20th to 6th place among Brazil’s top coffee importers. Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer, is seeing China emerge as a key market for its coffee exports.

In 2022, China became the global leader in branded coffee shop locations, boasting 49,600 stores, surpassing the United States, which has 42,800 stores, according to data from the World Coffee Portal.
