Brazilian Company Ships 400 Tons of Organic Coffee to Europe on Solar-Powered Sailing Ship

A special shipment of organic coffee will depart next Thursday (14) from São Sebastião Port, heading to the port of Le Havre in France. The consignment consists of about 400 tons of coffee. It will make an extraordinary journey with an environmental twist, as it will be transported on a sailing vessel, significantly reducing pollution.
The cargo movement is a partnership between FAFCoffees, Belco, and TOWT. It marks the first export of specialty coffee to Europe aboard such a vessel—a sailboat with no motor and powered by solar energy, operating with zero carbon emissions and no ocean pollution.
The 81-meter-long and 12-meter-wide Artemis ship is expected to complete the journey in about 20 days. At least eight people will crew it.
The coffee originated from Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza, located in the municipality of Mococa in São Paulo’s interior. Around 40 trucks transported it to the port. The farm cultivates an average of 80 varieties of organic coffee.
The Artemis ship docked at São Sebastião Port on Monday (11), beginning the loading operation. The departure for Europe (France) is scheduled for noon on Thursday. Additionally, 10 tons of specialty cocoa for the European chocolate industry will be shipped.
FAFCoffees owner Marcos Croce notes that this shipment is mainly symbolic because it represents a total environmental approach, starting from the coffee planting process and continuing through to export and distribution in France, a country also focused on environmental sustainability.
“Our producers grow mountain coffee in Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo, with a constant concern for sensory quality and organic soil throughout the process,” Croce explains.
The company chose a vessel that fully aligns with its environmental values. São Sebastião Port, located in what Croce considers the country’s most beautiful region, was selected as the departure point. This place holds its own against any other port in the world.
“When we started the export process, the company quickly understood the importance of using a vessel that embodies everything we believe in. Every small action counts towards the environmental change predicted to happen in 10 years, which will pass quickly,” Croce emphasized.
