Brazilian Container Exports Surge 20.1% in First Five Months of 2024 Compared to Last Year

Recent data disclosed from Datamar’s Business Intelligence team reveals that from January to May 2024, Brazil exported 1,270,258 TEUs of containers, marking a 20.1% increase compared to the same period last year.

In May alone, Brazilian exports via containers saw a 12.8% rise from May 2023 figures.

The top commodity exported by Brazil in containers during the first five months of 2024 was meat, with a volume 7.6% higher than the same period in 2023, followed by wood (17.4%) and cotton (283.5%).

China remained the leading destination for Brazilian container exports, experiencing a 32.5% volume increase in the first five months of 2024 compared to last year. The United States followed with an 11.7% increase, and Mexico with a 27.7% rise.

Imports

On the imports side, Brazilian container imports totaled 1,257,800 TEUs in the first five months of 2024, up by 17.3% from the same period last year. May imports grew by 3.7% compared to May 2023.

The most imported commodities by Brazil from January to May 2024 were plastics, showing a 31.9% increase from last year, followed by reactors, machines, and boilers (7.8%). Notably, glass imports surged by 350.4% in the same comparison period.

Key trading partners for Brazil’s container imports included China, with a 35.3% increase in volume in the first five months of 2024, the United States (+18%), and Germany (-1.0%).

In Argentina, container exports from January to May 2024 were 3.6% higher than the same period in 2023, while imports decreased by 22% in the same comparison.

Uruguayan container exports grew by 7.8% in the first five months of 2024, while imports increased by 3%.
