According to ABIMAPI (the Brazilian cookies, pasta, and industrialized bread & cake industry association), the cookie category reached US$ 48.9 million in exports in the 1st half of 2021. In total, the value of cookie exports grew 11.4% growth compared to 2020, representing an increase in the volume of 15.2% in the same period. Just over 30,000 tons of products were sold abroad compared to the same period last year (January to June).
The main cookie global players are from Brazil. The country is among the 20 largest global suppliers of more than 30 types of cookies, mostly sweets without icing, classified in the same Mercosur code (NCM 19053100). Different flavors, formats, and brands of filled cookies are very popular; this is the most manufactured category in Brazil.
Considering only the wafer segment, Brazil is even better in the foreign market and ranked in the world’s top 15 largest exporters. Wafer biscuits have strengthened Brazilian brands abroad because it is still a category under development, and there are expansion opportunities in several markets, different from Brazil, where the market is already saturated. Different formats are explored in traditional flavors such as chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla and tropical flavors such as lemon, coconut, pineapple, passion fruit, peanut, and walnuts.
According to Claudio Zanão, CEO of ABIMAPI, despite the unstable scenario due to the pandemic and the current economic situation in the country, and the strong impacts of the crisis on global maritime transport and the high price of flour, the devaluation of the Brazilian Real has helped cookie exports.
“Our industry is very competitive in the international market, favored by the strong domestic market which is positioned as the 3rd largest in the world. We have a volume that ensures constant supply to yearly buyers in more than 100 destinations. The cookie category is the most globalized in our industry. Foreigners know that there are several varieties of Brazilian cookies. This allows our companies to reach different markets – from Mercosur countries (our main partners in the category) to Middle East countries such as Yemen, Oman, Libya, and Saudi Arabia”, emphasizes Zanão.
By the end of this year, ABIMAPI expects average growth of 15% in value and 10% in volume. The expectation is to reach the figure of US$ 100 million in sales and 60,000 tons, depending on both exchange rate stability and logistics with regularization of shipments and a reduction in international freight costs, especially in maritime transport.
