Following a 14.13% growth in 2022, Brazilian medical device exports have already reached a total of US$433.5 million in 2023. During the first half of this year, the standout segment was the rehabilitation segment, which experienced an impressive 26.52% surge compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
Exports
Of the US$47.12 million worth of products from this segment that Brazil has exported this year, a significant 60.59% corresponds to the sales of orthopedic articles and appliances. This category encompasses devices employed in disability prevention and correction, as well as providing support and assistance for body parts post-illness, surgery, or fracture.
The national export performance in the initial half slightly lagged behind that of 2022, exhibiting a marginal decrease of 3.9%. This decline was largely attributed to a 20% reduction in international sales within the laboratory segment. Over the past two years, this segment has faced diminishing exports due to waning demand for products related to combating the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, there had been an 89.5% export increase, primarily driven by the sale of laboratory diagnostic reagents.
“Two years later, with a decrease in confirmed cases of the disease, the value has approached pre-pandemic levels, closing 2022 with a value just 29% higher than the one recorded in 2019,” remarks Larissa Gomes, project manager and international marketing representative of ABIMO – Brazilian Association of Medical Devices Industry.
Defying sector trends, exports from Brazilian Health Devices (BHD) associated national manufacturers, a sectoral initiative by ABIMO in collaboration with ApexBrasil (Brazilian Agency for the Promotion of Exports and Investments), witnessed a 10% growth during the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. “These positive indicators reflect the effective strategies devised by the project, which assesses the finest internationalization opportunities while identifying attractive and prospective markets for the national industry,” states Larissa.
Demonstrating the project’s success, this semester saw a rise in the percentage of exports represented by associated manufacturers in comparison to the national total. From January to June 2023, exports from BHD-affiliated companies constituted 13.2% of the nation’s total exports, marking the highest value recorded since 2019. Additionally, there was an average export growth of 35.1% to countries where BHD had undertaken commercial promotion activities in the past year.
Principal Consumer Countries
The American continent remains the chief importer of Brazilian technology. During the initial half, 65% of the total exports were directed to countries in this region, with the United States, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, and Chile being the primary recipients of Brazil’s sales. Europe accounted for 23.45% of the total exports, while Asia, Africa, and Oceania constituted 11.55% of the total.
Among the companies affiliated with BHD, the proportion of sales to American countries mirrors the national average: 63.28%. However, within the project, Asian nations accounted for 20.3% of total exports. “We can point out here that ABIMO and ApexBrasil facilitated the participation of Brazilian industries in exhibitions held in this region, such as SinoDental in China and IDEX in Turkey,” notes Larissa. In combination, Europe, Africa, and Oceania received 16.42% of products from affiliated manufacturers.
