Exports of poultry genetic material (including chicks and hatching eggs) totaled 2,646 thousand tonnes in February this year, reported the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). The figure tops the total exported in the same period last year (2,325 thousand tonnes) by 13.8%.
The revenues generated from exports in February reached US$ 19.4 million, a 7.4% decrease compared to the same period in 2023, with US$ 20.9 million.
Year-to-date, the cumulative increase stands at 10.1%, with 5,116 thousand tonnes exported in the first two months of this year, compared to 4,646 thousand tonnes in the same period last year. In revenue, there was a decrease of 8.2%, with US$ 38.7 million in the first two months of this year, compared to US$ 42.2 million in 2023.
Mexico, Brazil’s main destination for poultry exports, imported 1,656 thousand tonnes in the first two months of this year, 48.8% less than the total shipped in the same period last year. In a different trend, sales to South Africa totaled 1,490 thousand tonnes (no shipments in 2023), followed by Senegal, with 1,103 thousand tonnes (+75%), Paraguay, with 459 tonnes (+14%), and Venezuela, with 101 tonnes (+0.2%).
“The demand from African nations for Brazilian poultry genetics has been increasing, either for replenishing losses due to health issues or for building reliable alternatives for genetic supply,” analyzes Ricardo Santin, president of ABPA.
