Data from the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) show that in January, Brazilian exports of fertile eggs and poultry genetic material reached a total of 1,194 tons, 37.2% lower than the 1,902 tons shipped in the same period last year.
Shipments of fertile eggs alone reached 1,121 tons, 38.2% below the same month of 2019, when 1,816 tons were shipped. In terms of revenue, exports reached US$ 4.834 million, a 40.1% drop compared to the same period a year before, when total values were US$ 8.064 million.
The volume of exports of genetic material decreased 16% in January, down to 73 tons, compared to the 87 tons shipped in the same month last year. The balance of exports reached US$ 4.313 million, a decrease of 33.7% from the amount recorded in 2019, when it registered US$ 6.507 million.
According to Ricardo Santin, executive director of ABPA, the drop in Brazilian exports of poultry genetic material is related to the increase in domestic demand for poultry genetics aimed at meat production. “With the increase in Brazilian exports of chicken meat, Brazil has been prioritizing the housing of poultry. This behavior was already expected in order to meet the demands of the domestic and foreign markets”, said Santin.
One of the main destinations of Brazilian exports of genetics and fertile eggs was Senegal, which imported 430 tons. Another importante market was Paraguay, which imported 341 tons.
