Carlos Fávaro, the Brazilian Minister of Agriculture, commented on the vital role of fertilizers in agriculture, portraying them as synonymous with food, employment, opportunities, growth, economic stability, and inflation control. He stated, “Fertilizers are a matter of national security and represent harmony in the world because where there is food, there is peace.” He made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the 10th Brazilian Fertilizer Congress, organized by the National Association for the Diffusion of Fertilizers (Anda).
Held on August 29, the event brought together approximately 5,000 participants, including in-person attendees and those watching the live broadcast on social media. Experts from various agribusiness sectors, with a keen focus on the specifics of the fertilizer industry, discussed mechanisms for energy transition, global challenges, climate goals, logistics, infrastructure, and the National Fertilizer Plan (PNF).
Topics covered during the event included “New Global Mechanisms for Energy Transition” and “Challenges in Meeting New Global Climate Goals, Impact on Logistics and Infrastructure.” Additionally, the second edition of the Carlos Florence Award recognized some of the most significant innovations in technology and chemical production.
Regarding the re-establishment of the National Fertilizer and Plant Nutrition Council (Confert), Vice Vice-President of the Republic and Minister of Industry, Trade, and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, who also became chair of the council, discussed the reformulation of the PNF. He advocated for “a plan with concrete measures to reduce external dependency on fertilizers, lower costs for rural producers, create jobs, and expand foreign markets for Brazilian agricultural production,” which is already a global leader in this field.
The opening was marked by a speech from the Chairman of Anda’s Board of Directors, Eduardo de Souza Monteiro. This was followed by a program of discussions focused on the agricultural agenda, involving opinion leaders, businesspeople, scholars, and qualified professionals to shed light on the sector’s development and promote food security and sustainability. The significance of fertilizers for the success of agribusiness was highlighted, as it contributes to 25% of the national GDP and consumes 42 million tons of fertilizers annually.
Monteiro pointed out that this figure demonstrates how the fertilizer industry spares no effort to meet the significant demand in the Brazilian market, reinforcing Brazil’s role as one of the world’s major food producers.
He stated, “The fertilizer sector continues to make great efforts to ensure supply, collaborating to increase deliveries on time so that farmers have the necessary inputs to plan for a successful harvest.” Monteiro added, “The agricultural market’s demand is being entirely met,” highlighting Anda’s 55 years of uninterrupted work to promote the importance of fertilizers as inputs and nourishment for the soil.
