Brazilian exports of furniture and mattresses continue to grow in 2021. Year-to-date figures for international sales from January to May 2021 rose 72.9% compared to the same period last year, thus recuperating losses from the second half of 2020 when physical and logistical constraints were tightened worldwide.
The picture becomes even clearer when we compare May 2021 with that of the same month in the previous year; results increased by 125.4%. The number also helped increase the sector’s overall growth over the last 12 months, 34.3% from May 2020 to May 2021. This information is from “The Monitoring of Furniture Exports,” a monthly study developed by the IEMI (market intelligence for the Brazilian furniture industry association (ABIMOVEL) and the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil), dealing exclusivity with companies associated with the Brazilian Furniture Sector Project.
Overview
All the categories analyzed in the study actually experienced a positive variation in the period, demonstrating export opportunities in all segments of the national furniture industry.
The biggest highlight in the last edition of the “Furniture Export Monitoring” was upholstery, which grew 93.8% in the year and 26.9% in the last 12 months. The United States has been the main import market for Brazilian upholstery, growing 77.5% in deals closed in the first five months of 2021 compared to 2020. Uruguay and Puerto Rico appear right behind, showing increases of 98% and 293.2% in the same comparison, respectively. It is noteworthy that the relationship between national upholstery manufacturers and Puerto Rican buyers had a very significant jump in May: more than 1000%. Check the graph:
Another segment with a considerable jump in exports between January and May 2021 was mattresses: +73.1% in the year and +40.2% in the last 12 months. This time, Uruguay is in the lead as the largest destination for Brazilian mattresses globally: +56.7% in the first five months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. On the other hand, wood furniture exports increased by 71.3 % until May, followed by metal furniture, increasing 62.6% in the comparison.
Top destinations for Brazilian furniture in May 2021
Overall, the United States is the main international destination for Brazilian furniture, purchasing 67% more in the year-to-date figures than the first five months of 2020. Chile now ranks second in the ranking, with a jump of 240% in general negotiations. Uruguay appears in third place, growing 64.4% in the period.
The biggest news in the latest edition of the monitoring is that after an improvement in negotiations in April, the United Kingdom dropped from second to fourth position among the largest importers of Brazilian furniture and mattresses. Despite the drop in the ranking, the numbers remained positive in all comparisons with last year. Check these and other results in the list of the main international destinations for Brazilian furniture exports:
Target Markets: Peru
Right after the United Kingdom, we can observe the substantial increase in the Peruvian market as an importer of Brazilian furniture. In fifth place in this ranking, Peru imported 248.5% more in May 2021 than in May last year. Thus far, in 2021, the country imported 71.8% more than in the first 5 months of 2020 and 33.4% more compared to the last 12 months. This confirms the rise of furniture negotiations between the two countries, with Brazil being the second-largest source of furniture imported by Peru. China leads imports, with over 50% of this market share.
Among the main categories of products imported by the Peruvian market, metal furniture negotiations have been rising steeply, unlike mattresses, which have not been showing sufficient levels of commercialization from Brazil to Peru after falling in recent months. See below:
Netherlands
Among the 10 main destinations for Brazilian furniture and mattresses, the Netherlands increased its imports by 15.1% between January and May this year and 13.9% between May 2020 and May 2021. The growth was especially driven by the import of upholstery, which grew 44.4% in the last 12 months, showing that Brazilian furniture has conquered new markets.
