Brazilian grape exports grew significantly in 2021

The year 2021 showed impressive grape export results. According to data from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), US$ 155.9 million were collected between January and December, an increase of 43% compared to the previous year, with shipments reaching the mark of 76.6 million tons, an increase of 55, 6%.
In general, the performance of the first semester stood out as, comparatively speaking, the period does not traditionally yield expressive results in terms of exported volume. The second half of 2021, on the other hand, was difficult for fresh grape exporters, both in terms of the various logistical difficulties associated with the lack of containers available, as well as the low European demand during September, a period in which a good runoff occurred.
Thus, shipments for the second half of the year were concentrated in October and November, albeit the volume of Brazilian table grapes sold at the time was 41.1% higher than in the same period in 2020.
With the sluggish domestic market and the dollar and euro appreciation against the Brazilian currency, exports may remain attractive in 2022. However, producers in the São Francisco Valley (PE/BA) must contend with an additional challenge: the climate scenario, limiting the quantity and quality of available fruit, particularly in the first half of the year.
